The Olifants River runs through a dry, sunny part of the Western Cape. Its water makes it possible to grow grapes, citrus and vegetables along the valley, even though rainfall is low.
Towns such as Vredendal, Klawer and Lutzville are the main wine centres, and the route stretches from the mountains near Citrusdal all the way to the coast.
Irrigation from the river keeps the vines alive.
The valley is also known for oranges and lemons.
Some vineyards are close to the Atlantic coast.

Doringbaai on the coast is home to Fryer's Cove, one of the vineyards closest to the Atlantic in South Africa.
